    Study Notes

    • Peixes are vertebrates that live in water and have a body covered in scales.
    • Peixes have a respiratory system that uses gills.
    • Peixes are found in both salt and fresh water, and have evolved over 530 million years ago during the Devonian period.
    • Peixes reproduce through a process called desova. During desova, the female releases her eggs into calm water and the male then releases his sperm onto the eggs.
    • Osteichthyes, or fish with well-formed bones, are divided into two groups: those with smooth barbatanas and those with spiny barbatanas.
    • Condríctes, or fish without bones, are divided into two groups: those with lungs and those without lungs.
    • Peixes ósseos breathe using gills, while cartilaginosous fish breathe through gills that do not have an opérculo and are organized into five or seven pairs.
    • A continuous current of water enters through the mouth and bathes the gills for a fraction of a second, while the opérculo remains attached to the trunk, closing the passage to the mouth.
    • The exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide happens while the water is in contact with the gills.
