Flashcards

Soft tissue swelling around D5

Swelling around the fifth digit (D5), particularly common in conditions affecting this area.

Bone proliferation and osteophytes on phalanges

New bone growth (osteophytes) on all phalanges, especially pronounced on the fifth digit.

Osteophytes at joint margins

Bone spurs (osteophytes) at the edges of joints. This is a sign of joint degeneration.

Narrowing joint spaces

Decrease in the space between bones in a joint. This is a sign of joint narrowing and joint space reduction. It is often observed in D5

Distal radius and ulna fracture

Fracture of the distal (end) radius and ulna, resulting in displacement of the proximal (top) fragment of the broken bone.

A type of arthritis that occurs when the cartilage in a joint breaks down. It is often characterized by pain, stiffness, and swelling.

Study Notes

Evaluating Images

  • Assess soft tissue, bone, and joint changes in images.
  • Formulate a diagnosis or list differentials.

Soft Tissue Changes

  • Swelling around the mid-tibia/fibula, increased opacity.
  • Swelling around proximal humerus.
  • Swelling around elbow joint, increased opacity likely enesthesophtye
  • Soft tissue swelling around digits, especially digit 5.
  • Swelling around antebrachium.
  • Mild soft tissue swelling around hock.

Bone Changes

  • Complete, comminuted fracture through the mid-diaphysis of the tibia and oblique, complete overriding fracture of the fibula.
  • Osteolysis of tibial diaphysis, moth-eaten appearance with ill-defined lucent areas.
  • Moth eaten lysis of proximal bone with clear transition zone, sunburst and amorphous periosteal reaction indicative of aggressive lesion.
  • Marked evidence of new bone proliferation and osteophytes on all phalanges, but especially on digit 5.
  • Fracture to distal radius and ulna including transverse fracture, caudal and medial displacement of proximal fragment- simple and closed.
  • Evidence of bone fragments, likely comminuted chips, from dislocation.

Joint Changes

  • No joint involvement across the joint
  • Narrowed joint space and irregular joint margin at radial head
  • Osteophytes at joint margins, narrowing joint spaces (particularly in metacarpophalangeal joint and interphalangeal joints)

Potential Diagnoses/Differentials

  • Pathological fracture most likely due to bone neoplasia (e.g., osteosarcoma).
  • Osteoarthritis of elbow.
  • Osteoarthritis of the foot.
