Radio Communication Terms
- MOVE-UP: Computer prompts dispatcher to dispatch next available unit to cover other districts when all apparatus are committed to emergency incidents.
- Negative: Response meaning "no" or "not available".
- On the scene: Arrived at dispatched call.
- Out-of-service: Not available for calls.
- "Use Barrier Precaution": Units responding to incidents with infectious diseases should use barrier precautions; includes Tuberculosis, Meningitis, Septic, HIV, or skin diseases.
Radio Signatures
- Company officers and acting officers: Assume radio signature of unit number (e.g., Engine 21, Tower 22).
- Drivers: Assume radio signature of unit plus DRIVER (e.g., Engine 21 DRIVER, Tower 22 DRIVER).
- #3 jump seat position: Assume radio signature of unit plus JUMP (e.g., Engine 21 JUMP, Tower 22 JUMP).
- Additional firefighters: Assume radio signature of unit plus JUMP 2, JUMP 3, etc.
- Staff officers and others: Use assigned radio signatures (e.g., U22, TRT24).
Aerial Platform Basket/Ladder
- Aerial operation: Firefighter operating aerial assumes radio signature of vehicle plus TURNTABLE (e.g., Tower 22 TURNTABLE).
- 800MHz frequency radio: Used when status keys are not available and voice transmissions are necessary.
Dispatch and Response
- Lead equipment notifies Central of group in-service when responding from a station.
- Equipment responding from a location other than quarters notifies Central of approximate location.
- Central acknowledges responding units and incident nature; supplemental information can be given after this transmission (called a "readback").
- Dispatcher corrects incorrect information repeated by Fire personnel.
Communication Process
- Unit to be called is stated first, followed by the unit initiating the call.
- Wait for a "go-ahead" to transmit a message after a voice transmission.
Fire Dispatch and Fireground Talk Groups
- Fire Dispatch (FD3) talk group: Located in position 1 and 16 on all digital portable radios; used for emergency and non-emergency incident dispatches.
- Hoffman Estates Fire Ground (HFES FG) talk group: Located in position 2 and 15; used for fireground operations and incidents with heavy radio traffic.
- Schaumburg Fireground talk group: Located in position 3; used for fireground operations and incidents with heavy radio traffic.
