    Study Notes

    Radio Communication Protocols

    • OPS 1 (primary tactical talkgroup): Staffed 24/7, used for low-complexity incidents (Fire, Community Health, AMR) with limited radio traffic.

    • OPS 2-12 (multi-responder incidents): Staffed as needed, managing complex incidents or special events. Typically assigned by Dispatch but follows specific guidelines for different units (e.g., OPS2, OPS3 - majority PF&R units, OPS6 - pin-ins, rollovers, marine).

    Private Talk Groups

    • PFB TALK (semi-secure administrative): Exclusive to PF&R radios. Can be used for administrative traffic and communications between companies, Chief Officers, Fire Liaisons, and investigators (e.g., semi-private communications for certain tasks). Monitored by Fire Liaison during office hours (0600-1800) and during major alarms.

    Simplex Channels

    • Four simplex channels are available for direct radio-to-radio communications without using the radio system. Limited to the immediate area of the radio use. Not monitored by Fire Dispatch. No special authorization needed for use.

    • Fire Liaison is required to monitor multiple talkgroups at all times. When contacting the Fire Liaison, indicate the talkgroup being used (e.g., "Fire Liaison 124 from E-2 on PFB TALK").
