Study Notes
Qualitative Research
- Qualitative research is useful when understanding subjective experiences
- It is often used to explore complex phenomena
- It involves analyzing data, such as text, video, or audio, for patterns and themes
- Qualitative research often uses six steps to develop a theory
- Recording Data
- Transcription
- Familiarization
- Coding & Analysis
- Theory Development
- Testing/Validation
Types of Analysis
- Conceptual analysis investigates meaning (e.g., what is happiness?)
- Content analysis examines concepts within communication (e.g., using certain language)
- Thematic analysis examines themes and patterns within communication (e.g., producing grounded theories)
Qualitative Coding
- Codes are labels used to describe meaningful segments or relationships
- Open Coding is the initial phase of qualitative coding, where categories are selected and named from the analysis of data - This is the initial stage of analysis and explores emerging themes
- Axial Coding is the second phase of qualitative coding, where relationships between sub-categories and categories are identified - It starts to identify and build relationships between themes
- Grounded Theory is the process of generating a theory from data - involves building a theory using the categories and influences identified during the coding process
Critical Evaluation & Reproducibility in Psychology
- Critically evaluate the theory behind research, ensure it is adequately presented, and the hypothesis is clear
- Assess if the study design allows for testing the hypothesis
- Evaluate the operationalization of the dependent variable
- Determine if the statistics are appropriate for the data
- Include the strength of the correlation coefficient to help readers understand the relationship between variables
- Mention any outliers present in the data
- Report p-values to indicate statistical significance
Secondary Data Analysis
- The goal of secondary data analysis is to use existing data to answer new research questions
- The steps for secondary data analysis include:
- Determine the research question
- Find the appropriate dataset related to the research question
- Analyze the data
- Interpret the results and draw conclusions
