Study Notes
Introduction to Qualitative Research
- Qualitative research is valuable for documenting human experiences, behaviors, and practices.
- It's particularly useful for answering "why" and "how" questions.
- It helps researchers maximize the use of qualitative research in addressing research problems.
Types of Qualitative Research
- There are six common types of qualitative research:
- Phenomenology: Describes participants' lived experiences of a specific event. Uses interviews, observations, and surveys.
- Ethnography: Researchers immerse themselves in the natural settings of subjects to understand their culture and experiences.
- Grounded theory: Explains a phenomenon and its evolution. Often deals with broad research topics.
- Case study: An in-depth look at a specific subject (person, business, etc.). Data gathered from various sources and experience trials to form a conclusion.
- Narrative review: Documents changes in human perspective or behavior over time. Updates data as it happens. Identifies a starting point and follows the development.
- Historical review: Describes past events to fully understand current patterns. Tests existing ideas with available resources.
Qualitative Research Framework
- Figure 2 shows a common framework for grounded theory research.
- The framework includes data collection, cyclical processes, coding, theoretical sampling, and theory development.
Applications of Qualitative Research
- Case studies are valuable for managing patients with unique conditions, creating medical procedures.
- Qualitative research is helpful in market analysis (e.g., consumer experiences with new products), in assessing nursing improvements (e.g., work habits and ethics ), and in documenting medical procedures applied in cases with unique genetic diseases.
