Puberty is the stage of life when your body changes from a child's body into a grown-up's body. This process happens over several years, starting around age ten for girls and twelve for boys. Thelarche

Thelarche is the first sign of puberty, typically occurring between ages eight and thirteen. During this phase, girls develop breasts, which can cause physical discomfort and emotional turmoil due to the change in appearance. Hormonal changes trigger breast budding and enlargement. The growth spurt is usually more noticeable in the upper torso area because the breast tissue has a larger blood supply that ensures faster development compared to other tissues. Although it may seem like each girl undergoes thelarche differently, there isn't much variation, with most showing similar patterns.

Rapid Increase in Height and Weight

As part of puberty development, both girls and boys experience a period of significant growth. In girls, this growth spurt occurs around the time they start their periods, while in boys, it tends to happen earlier, between ages eleven and fourteen. During this phase, the rate of growth increases dramatically, leading to a surge in height and weight. The average age for peak height velocity is fifteen for girls and sixteen for boys. Girls tend to grow faster during the early teenage years, reaching a final adult height by sixteen years old, whereas boys continue growing until they reach twenty years old.

Adrenarche

Adrenarche marks another milestone in puberty development. It is the point where hormones produced by the adrenal glands start surging, causing a variety of physical changes. Boys might notice their voices deepening, growth of public hair, and increased muscle strength. For girls, this stage triggers the onset of female secondary sexual characteristics, such as the development of underarm and pubic hair. Adrenarche occurs before thelarche and precedes menarche, meaning girls could see some signs of puberty before experiencing breast growth or menstruation.

Axillary Hair Growth

Axillary hair growth, also known as armpit hair, is one of the many changes that occur during adolescence. In girls, this hair starts to appear after thelarche, usually between ages nine and thirteen. The hair initially appears soft, light, and downy, similar to the soft, fine hair on the lids of the eyelashes. As time goes by, the hair becomes coarser and thicker, growing darker and increasing in length. This growth is a result of the hormone testosterone, which also causes other secondary sexual characteristics, such as the deepening of the voice and increased muscle strength.

Menarche

Menarche, the onset of menstruation, is the final stage of puberty development. This event marks the beginning of fertility and occurs around age twelve for girls. Menstruation is a normal part of a woman's reproductive cycle, and it is essential for a woman to have a regular menstrual cycle to become pregnant. The first period may not be fertile, but the body is preparing to be able to conceive. Menstruation continues throughout a woman's reproductive years until menopause, typically around age fifty.
