Study Notes

Freudian Theory and Personality Development

  • Conflict is crucial in personality development, as it's the balance between ID, EGO, and Super-ego.

Psycho-sexual Stages of Development

  • 5 stages:
    • Oral stage (birth-1.5 years)
    • Anal stage (1.5-3 years)
    • Phallic stage (3-6 years)
    • Latency (6-puberty)
    • Genital stage (puberty & beyond)

Psychic Determinism

  • Nothing happens accidentally or randomly.

Goal of Freudian Therapy

  • Make the unconscious conscious, allowing individuals to work through their issues.

Mechanisms and Teleology

  • Mechanism: past causes the present (consistent with Freud's view)
  • Teleology: behaviors are directed towards the future (consistent with Jung's view)

Jung's View of Religion

  • Jung differed from Freud, who saw religion as a "collective neurosis" that should be abolished.

Types of Anxiety

  • Ego gets anxiety from being unable to mediate conflict between ID and super-ego
  • Objective/realistic anxiety (response to external fear)
  • Neurotic anxiety (unknown danger)
  • Moral anxiety (feelings of shame from not meeting expectations)

Defense Mechanisms

  • Ego's "magic tricks" to protect individuals from internal conflicts and outer stressors
  • 9 types:
    • Repression
    • Denial
    • Rationalization
    • Displacement
    • Regression
    • Projection
    • Reaction formation
    • Sublimation
    • Isolation

Oedipus Complex

  • Unconscious sexual desire for the parent of the opposite sex, occurring at an early age.

3 Levels of Mental Life

  • Conscious: aware of, intentional actions, connected to reality
  • Subconscious: not aware of, muscle-memory
  • Unconscious: driving force, motivates most of our actions, produces anxiety

Structures of Personality

  • ID:
    • Basic biological urges to survive/thrive
    • No connection to reality, amoral, instinctive, primary
    • Source of psychic energy and libido
  • EGO:
    • Developed after birth, finds realistic solutions
    • Has a theory of mind, delays gratification, and uses secondary process thinking
  • SUPER-EGO:
    • Moral component, developed around age 6
    • Comprises conscience and ego-ideal
    • Demands perfection

Anxiety and the Ego

  • Ego gets anxiety from being unable to mediate conflict between ID and super-ego.

Libido and Psycho-sexual Stages

  • Libido: high sex drive, driven force behind behavior
  • Connected to psycho-sexual stages of development

Explore the connection between conflict and personality development in the psychosexual stages proposed by Sigmund Freud, including the oral, anal, phallic, latency, and genital stages.
