Mood Disorders
- Loss of sense of control and great distress are characteristic of mood disorders
Depression
- Depressed mood and loss of interest or pleasure are the key symptoms of depression
Depressed Mood
- A sustained emotional state, most of the day (>50%), nearly every day
- Can be indicated by subjective report (e.g. feels sad, empty, hopeless) or observation by others
- Often described as a profound sense of hopelessness or internal emptiness
Suicidal Ideation
- Recurrent thoughts of death, not just fear of dying
- Recurrent suicidal ideation without a specific plan, or a suicide attempt or a specific plan for committing suicide
Impact of Symptoms
- Symptoms cause clinically significant distress or impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning
Onset of Depression
- First depressive episode occurs before age 40 in about 50% of patients
- Later onset associated with absence of family history of mood disorders, antisocial personality disorder, and alcohol abuse
