Study Notes

The Actualization Tendency

  • A basic human motivation to actualize, maintain, and enhance the self, which encompasses all physiological and psychological needs.
  • Serves to maintain the organism providing sustenance and survival.
  • Full human growth and development are neither automatic nor effortless.
  • It is part of a larger actualization tendency.

Organismic Valuing Process

  • A natural instinct that directs you towards the most fulfilling pursuits.
  • Experiences in terms of their value for fostering or hindering your actualization and growth are being judged.
  • Life experiences are also evaluated.

Experiential World

  • Provides you with a frame of reference or context that influences your growth and behavior.
  • Also known as the subjective world of the individual.
  • This process is known as phenomenology.

Phenomenal Field

  • A person's entire experience of the world is their phenomenal field.
  • This is a subjective world and everything that is experienced is part of it.
  • It's through their phenomenal field that people perceive the world and make sense of it.

Dissociation and the Self

  • Dissociation happens when a person is disconnected from their true self.
  • When this happens, the actualizing tendency may deviate into behaviors that do not lead to actualization.

Self-Concept

  • The “self” that one forms may be at variance with the real experience.
  • There can be a wide gap between the ideal self, and other components of the self-concept. This creates incongruence.

Ideal Self vs. Real Self

  • The ideal self is what you think you should ideally be.
  • The real self is what you actually are.
  • The ideal self can be influenced by society, and what you think is in your best interest.
  • A more significant overlap between the ideal self and real self results in easier self-actualization.
  • A smaller overlap between the ideal self and real self results in more difficult self-actualization.
