Neurodevelopmental Disorders
- Neurodevelopmental disorders include: Intellectual Disabilities (ID), Communication Disorder (CD), Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Specific Learning Disorder, Motor Disorders, and Other Neurodevelopmental Disorders.
Intellectual Disabilities (ID)
- Characterized by significantly below-average intellectual and adaptive functioning, evident in childhood.
- Difficulties in three areas: Conceptual Domain, Social Domain, and Practical Domain.
- DSM IV: formerly known as Mental Retardation.
Communication Disorder (CD)
- Includes Language Disorder and Speech Sound Disorder.
- Language Disorder: characterized by expressive ability (lower) and receptive language (average), resistant to treatment, and difficulty with reading comprehension.
- Speech Sound Disorder: difficulty in forming speech sounds needed to communicate with others, responds well to treatment, and improves over time.
Motor Disorders
- Developmental Coordination Disorder: characterized by marked impairment in motor coordination, with performances of motor activities well below that expected for the child's chronological age.
- Stereotypic Movement Disorder: characterized by repetitive, nonfunctional, and self-destructive behaviors.
- Tic Disorders: characterized by sudden, rapid, recurrent, nonrhythmic motor movement or vocalization.
Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
- Characterized by inattention and/or hyperactivity-impulsivity.
- Inattention: difficulty sustaining attention, following through on instructions, and staying organized.
- Hyperactivity-Impulsivity: fidgeting, leaving seat, and interrupting or blurting out answers.
