Sensation & Perception
- Perception is the process of interpreting sensory information
- Two types of processing: bottom-up and top-down
- Bottom-up: processing sensory information directly
- Top-down: processing using prior knowledge and expectations
- Sense translates outside information into neural activity
- Sensation = initial message from senses; representation of stimulus energy
- Perception = selection, organization, and interpretation; conscious experience; meaning
Visual Perception
- Visual processing is the process of interpreting visual stimuli
- Visual stimuli is light waves
- The eye has two main layers responsible for eye color
- The iris is composed of two layers, epithelium and stroma
- The combination of these elements determines eye color (melanin and collagen)
- Heterochromia is when a person has two different colored eyes
Eye Color
- Eye color is determined by the combination of melanin and collagen.
- Melanin is a pigment that absorbs light: Dark brown, black, or brown
- Collagen is a structural protein that scatters light: different shades of gray, hazel, blue, or green
Visual Processing (Retina)
- Visual processing begins in the retina
- The Retina has two types of receptors: rods and cones
- Rods are sensitive to low light levels (dim light vision)
- Cones are sensitive to bright light levels ( color vision)
