History of National Service Training Program (NSTP)
- The NSTP started during the Spanish colonial era with training courses similar to ROTC
- ROTC began in the Philippines in 1912 at the University of the Philippines
- During World War II, ROTC graduates helped fight for the Philippines’ freedom
- In 1957, Executive Order 59 made ROTC a mandatory course for all colleges and universities
- After the Marcos era, ROTC was replaced by Citizen Military Training
- The ROTC returned in the 1990s under the AFP Reservist Act
- The ROTC faced controversy in the early 2000s after multiple student protests
- The NSTP Act of 2001 replaced mandatory ROTC with optional ROTC, CWTS, and LTS
NSTP Act of 2001
- Officially known as Republic Act 9163
