Classification of Fibres
- Fibres can be classified into three main groups: inorganic, natural, and man-made.
Types of Fibres
- Fibril: a very small cell or fibre, a long cell or fibre of very small diameter or a component of a cell wall.
- Staple Fibre: short lengths of fibres, usually 15-500 mm, that must be further processed (spun) into yarn before being woven into fabrics.
- Continuous Filaments: manufactured fibres of indefinite length, extruded from a spinneret during fibre production.
Yarn Types
- Spun Yarn: a yarn consisting of fibres of regular or irregular staple length, usually bound together by twist.
- Filament Yarn: a yarn of an indefinite or extreme length, found naturally in silk or manufactured fibres extruded into filaments.
- Textured Filament Yarn: a yarn that has been geometrically altered to impart bulk, increase moisture absorption, etc.
Properties of Textile Fibre
- Primary properties: high length to width ratio, strength/tenacity, flexibility, inter-attraction force, spinning quality (cohesiveness), and uniformity.
- Secondary properties: physical shape, elastic recovery & elongation, resiliency, flammability & other thermal reactions, density, luster, colour, and moisture regain.
Classification of Textile Fibre
- Natural Fibre: Vegetable (seed, bast, leaf, fruit), Animal (wool, silk), and Mineral (asbestos).
- Man-made Fibre: Regenerated (semi-synthetic), Synthetic
Textile Raw Materials/Fibres
- Textile: originates from the Latin word "textilis", now generally applied to fibres, yarns, or fabrics or products made of fibres, yarns or fabrics.
- Fibre: a natural or chemical substance consisting of flexibility, with a high ratio of length to diameter (normally length is 1000 times greater than its diameter).
- Textile Fibre: a natural or chemical substance that must have sufficient strength, inter-attraction force, fineness, and spinability.
