Study Notes

Prokaryotic Cell Structures

Mesosome

  • A special membranous structure formed by the extensions of plasma membrane into the cell

Cyanobacteria

  • Have membranous extensions called chromatophores into the cytoplasm, which contain pigments

Flagella

  • Found in motile bacterial cells, composed of filament, hook, and basal body
  • Responsible for cell motility

Pili and Fimbriae

  • Pili: elongated tubular structures made up of pillin, used for attachment to host and other substances
  • Filament: the longest portion of pili, extending from the cell surface to the outside
  • Fimbriae: small bristle-like fibers, used for attachment to rocks in streams and host tissues
  • Sex pilus: a type of fimbriae used for bacterial conjugation

Ribosomes

  • The site of protein synthesis
  • Attach to mRNA to form polyribosomes or polysomes
  • Translate mRNA into protein
