Study Notes
Derivatives of Twill Weave
- Twill weaves have various derivatives, including pointed, herringbone, combined, broken, and elongated twills
- These are created by modifying the basic twill weave structure
Pointed Twills
- Created by combining right and left-hand twills on specific numbers of ends
- Calculating the number of ends and picks:
- Ends = R + L (where R is right-hand twill ends and L is left-hand twill ends)
- Picks = # of Threads of Twill Factor
- Example 1 (3/1 twill, 4 ends right, 4 ends left):
- Total Ends = 4 + 4 = 8
- Total Picks = 3 + 1 = 4
- Minimum threads needed: 8 x 4. Two repeats shown: 16 x 8 threads
Herringbone Twills
- Similar to pointed twills but the twill direction reverses when the direction changes
- Calculating the number of ends and picks:
- Ends = L + R
- Picks = # of Threads of Twill Factor
Combined Twills
- Formed by combining two or more twills in a single design
- Calculating the number of ends and picks:
- Ends = LCM of the twill factors x # of Twills
- Picks = LCM of the twill factors
Broken Twills
- The diagonal line of a twill is deliberately broken creating attractive visual effects
Reversing Method
- A regular twill is broken by reversing its draft in groups of 2, 3, 4, etc., which is called the Reversing Unit.
- Calculation for threads and picks required:
- Ends = LCM of (Twice of Reversing Unit & Threads of Twill)
- Picks = Threads of Twill
Entering & Skipping Method
- A broken twill is formed by entering and skipping threads of an ordinary twill
- Suitable skip number is one less or more than the entering number
- Calculation for threads and picks required: - Ends = Entering Factor x Threads of Twill - Picks = Threads of Twill
Elongated Twills
- Elongated twills vary from ordinary twills in that the diagonal line does not run at an angle of 45°
- The angle is influenced by thread densities (ends per inch and picks per inch) and the twill weave construction
- The angle can be adjusted by:
- Varying the thread densities of the fabric
- Applying specific twill construction methods
- Combining the above two methods
