- TR Awareness SMORE Newsletter Project (30%): Educate others about Recreation Therapy by creating an interactive newsletter for TR Awareness Month (February). Each group of 3 members will create 4 widgets per person
- LinkedIn Profile Assignment (20%): Create a LinkedIn profile, complete a LinkedIn Learning course by Oliver Schinkten, and submit the profile URL
- Mock Interview & Job Application (10%): Submit a job application and participate in a mock interview with a community agency

- Ontario offers different education levels: 1-year Postgraduate Certificates, 2-year Diplomas, and 3-4 year Degrees

- Credentialing is an umbrella term for programs that define and recognize professional competence
Four Types of Credentialing

Licensure / Regulation
- Licensure is a government-issued permission allowing individuals to engage in a specific profession
- If a profession is regulated, it is mandatory to be licensed
- Annual fees apply for licensing
- Most Ontario professions became regulated in 1993
- Recently regulated professions (2007): Naturopathy, Homeopathy, Kinesiology, and Psychotherapy
- Regulated Health Professions Act establishes health regulatory colleges to protect the public
- Colleges ensure healthcare professionals are safe, ethical, and competent
- Colleges handle complaints and disciplinary actions
Process to Become a Regulated Profession
- Apply to the government and demonstrate public risk
- If approved, the government delegates authority to a professional college
- The college oversees scope of practice, code of ethics, and standards of practice
Certification
- Certification is a formal document recognizing proficiency in a trade or profession
- Certification is voluntary, not required for practice
- Recognizes education, experience, and professional requirements
NCTRC - National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification
- Established in the US in the 1970’s and accredited in 1993 provides the CTRS credential
- CEU is Continuing Education Units
- CTRS Professional Eligibility - Academic Path requires a university degree in Recreation & Leisure Studies, 6 TR courses & 6 Supportive Courses, a 14-week, 560-hour internship under a CTRS, and passing the NCTRC exam
- Certification must be renewed every 5 years
Registration
- TRO (Therapeutic Recreation Ontario) has set up a voluntary registration process
- The R/TRO designation demonstrates excellence and requires assessment in formal education, supportive coursework, practical experience, and professional contributions
- The application fee is $165 (+HST)
- Submit proof of diploma & transcripts, practical experience verification, and professional contribution points
- Applications are reviewed 4 times a year in February, May, August, and November
Accreditation
- Accreditation is a voluntary self-regulatory evaluation process
- Establishes that an institution, program, or service meets certain standards
National Status
- CTRA (Canadian Therapeutic Recreation Association) recognizes CTRS and ATRA (American Therapeutic Recreation Association) is moving towards regulation instead
