Primary Syphilis

  • Incubation period: 9-90 days
  • Develops at site of contact/inoculation
  • Presents as a single, painless, clean-based, indurated ulcer with firm, raised borders
  • Ulcer may occur at any site, including anogenital, tongue, pharynx, lips, fingers, nipples, etc.
  • Associated with non-tender regional adenopathy
  • Highly infectious
  • Diagnosed using darkfield microscopy
  • VDRL (Venereal Disease Research Laboratory) or RPR (Rapid Plasma Reagin) tests are not yet positive
  • Can resolve spontaneously without treatment after a few weeks
