Preventive Maintenance Checklist for Heavy Equipment
- Start with inspecting the exterior of the equipment, including lights, steps, handrails, undercarriage, brakes, electrical and hydraulic lines, hydraulic oil, fuel tank, lift arms, body, grease lines, and work tools.
- Inspect the tires, valve stems, tread, rims, lug nuts, axles, and drive shafts for wheeled machines, and rollers, sprockets, idler wheels, metal or rubber tracks, and torsion axles for tracked machines.
- Check the fluid levels, oil filter, belts, hoses, battery terminals, and safety covers or finger guards in the engine compartment.
- Inspect lights, windows, mirrors, washer fluid levels, windshield wipers, and ROPS outside the cab.
- Check the seat, seatbelt installation dates, mirrors, windows, pedals, and inside cab lights inside the cab.
- Inspect the fire extinguisher if there is one in the cab.
- Replace any burned-out bulbs, rusty or damaged grab points, and worn or damaged parts.
- Take the equipment off the floor if any filters, fluid levels, lines, fittings, or parking brake are getting ready to fail.
- Sharpen the cutting edge or teeth of smaller work tools if necessary.
- Refill any fluids that are lower than their optimum level and check the equipment for obvious leaks.
- Replace the oil filter regularly to prevent the engine from running poorly.
- Remove and replace any damaged safety covers or finger guards.
