Understanding the Present Progressive Tense
The present progressive tense is one of six basic verb tenses used in English, providing us with a concise yet descriptive method to convey actions occurring over time right now. While it may initially seem confusing due to its name, its function becomes clearer once you grasp the fundamental concept behind it.
Usage
When to employ the present progressive tense? Typically, we utilize this tense when referring to ongoing events, temporary situations, or activities underway during the current moment. For instance, consider these examples:
- I'm studying for my exams right now.
- They are building a new library downtown.
- She will be going shopping after work today. (future tense) ➡️ She is going shopping after work today. (current progressing into future)
Even though the action described by using the present progressive tense doesn't necessarily happen every day, its primary role lies in emphasizing the ongoing nature of events within the current context.
Irregular Verbs
Unfortunately, learning the present progressive tense isn't just limited to understanding how and why to use it; mastery also includes comprehending which irregular verbs follow specific rules while creating the present progressive tense form. Let's explore some common examples:
- Go → am going
- Eat → am eating
- Drink → am drinking
- See → see + -ing
Note that the irregular verb 'see' requires adding '-ing' instead of following the general rule of combining base verb+am+base verb-ing. However, most irregular verbs follow the standard pattern mentioned above. By memorizing these forms, you can confidently create appropriate present progressive sentences involving various irregular verbs.
