Early Dwellings
- Early humans began building shelters to protect themselves.
- Residential architecture met physical needs.
- Sacred architecture met spiritual needs.
Residential Architecture
- Provides shelter.
- Facilitated the transition to a sedentary lifestyle and agriculture.
Basic Hut Types
- Three basic types of huts.
- Pit-house: a dugout in the ground.
- Cabin: has a complex roof that can be dug into the ground.
- Soden house: resembles a cabin dug into the riverbank.
- It continues to be used today, preserves energy, is inexpensive, warm in winter, and cool in summer.
Cult Architecture (Megaliths)
- Consists of 3 forms, and are constructed of very large stones.
- Menhir: the largest vertical stone.
- Trilith: three megaliths.
- Cromlech: a sanctuary; many standing menhirs and triliths standing freely form a ring, like Stonehenge. It is a precursor of churches and temples and is in the open.

- Has 4 ways to mark a grave:
- Cista: today, a tombstone.
- Dolmen: a covered tomb with a roof.
- Tumulus: an underground tomb.
- Graves in stone.
