Overview

Prayer, known as Salah in Islam, is one of the Five Pillars of Islam, a set of actions considered mandatory by believers and prescribed by Allah as part of an unconditional obligation. These pillars define the relationship between a worshiper and Allah based on the belief in one Abrahamic god, performing acts of worship, giving alms, observing fasts, making pilgrimages, and purifying oneself through ablution.

Importance of Prayer

Salah is considered the foundation of Islam and serves several purposes. It strengthens faith, helps maintain physical health, promotes good character, enhances mental concentration, builds self-discipline, fosters humility, encourages devotional behavior, and reminds the faithful of their duties.

Structure of Prayer

Muslims perform five prayers each day. These pray sessions are named according to the time of day they occur: Fajr (dawn), Dhuhr (afternoon), Asr (late afternoon), Maghrib (sunset), and Isha'a (night). Each prayer involves reciting specific verses from the Quran, invoking Allah with blessings upon other Prophets, engaging in meditation and contemplation, and performing physical movements called rakats, which vary between two and four for each session.

How Prayer Is Practiced

To perform Salah, Muslims must be clean according to Islamic purity regulations and follow a series of ablution procedures, including washing their face, arms, hands, ears, feet, mouth, and nose. The prayers are typically performed in mosques, communally during special times of the year, or individually in private spaces throughout the day.
