Poverty and Homelessness
- Poverty is a multifaceted and complex concept, difficult to define
- Seebohm Rowntree defined poverty in 1901 as the total income necessary for biological existence, realizing minimum physical needs weren't met
- The World Bank defined poverty in 1990 as the lowest standard of living
- Poverty includes factors such as health, education, and social integration
- Causes of poverty can vary by country/region, dependent on age, religion, race, worldview, education, income level, community, and development
- Population pressure is a cause, as high growth rates in underdeveloped countries contribute to a workforce increase and unemployment. Low wage jobs are another cause
- Income distribution and inequality create a vicious cycle of poverty, causing a decline in income and worsening living conditions
- Household size and structure plays a role; family structure changes, especially in recent years, affect poverty levels
- Poverty is connected to gender; women experience poverty more severely (70% of those in extreme poverty are women)
- Health, socioeconomic environments impact health and well being; high crime rates, social incompatibility, mental health, physical health, increase risk of accidents/injuries
- Migration, political instability, conflict, inequality in land ownership, inadequacy of public services/infrastructure can increase poverty, particularly in rural areas
- Racial discrimination limits opportunities such as education, housing, and high wages, leading to poverty
- Wrong political policies, insufficient agricultural support, industry distortion, and pollution can cause poverty
- Economic fluctuations, crises, international financial capital changes, high interest rates, privatization of markets, and the search for cheap labor can all contribute to poverty
Types of Poverty
- Absolute poverty: Individuals/households only meet basic needs to maintain a minimum standard of living
- Relative poverty: Individuals/households who meet basic needs but fall below the general welfare level of society due to inadequate personal resources and prevented social participation
- Human poverty: Lack of basic human skills (e.g., literacy, malnutrition, short life expectancy, inadequate maternal/child health, preventable diseases)
Child Poverty
- Poverty is a major cause of high child morbidity (illness or disease) and mortality (death)
- Globally, approximately 2.85 billion children and 600 million living below the poverty line; 1 in 5 children are currently poor;
- 200 million children under age 5 in developing countries struggle with absolute poverty
- Child mortality is linked to maternal age, education level, and access needed care and resources
Homeless
- Homelessness is defined as the lack of a permanent place of residence.
- Homelessness is rooted in job loss, lack of income, and loss of housing
- Other factors include physical and mental health issues, divorce, domestic violence and substance abuse

- Poor individuals and families require significant support
- Nurses must help with determining health status/needs, developing therapeutic relationships, ensuring access to care, facilitating service delivery to benefit the family, advocating for individuals/families and guiding families in using community resources
