- India Post has a glorious past and a bright future with an ambitious project commissioned
- It is the backbone of India's communication network and core of the country's socio-economic development for the last 167 years
- It has a network of 159251 Post Offices, with 25110 Departmental Post offices and 134141 Branch Post offices, serving 90.41% of rural areas and 09.59% of urban areas
Vision and Mission
- Vision: "India Post's products and services will be the customer's first choice"
- Mission:
- To sustain its position as the largest postal network in the world
- To provide mail, parcel, money transfer, banking, insurance, and retail services with speed and reliability
- To provide services to customers on a value for money basis
- To ensure that employees are proud to be its main strength and serve customers with a human touch
- To continue to deliver social security services and enable last mile connectivity as a Government of India platform
Organization Structure
- The Department of Posts functions under the Ministry of Communications, Government of India
- The head of the Department is the Secretary, Department of Posts, who is also the Chairman, Postal Services Board
- The Postal Services Board consists of 6 Members, with a Director General, Department of Posts, and Additional Director General (Coordination) and Additional Secretary & Financial Advisor
- The organization setup at the Directorate and below is divided into circles, regions, divisions, and post offices
Administrative Setup
- The country is divided into 23 circles, each encompassing one or more states and/or union territories
- Each circle is headed by a Chief Postmaster General
- The circle is divided into regions, each headed by a Postmaster General
- Regions are further classified into divisions headed by a Superintendent or Senior Superintendent
- Divisions are classified as Postal or RMS Divisions, with Postal Divisions handling postal operations and RMS Divisions managing mail processing
Operative Network
- Post offices collect mail and perform financial transactions
- Mail is sorted and moved to delivery post offices for delivery
- Post offices are classified as Head Post Offices, Sub Post Offices, and Branch Post Offices

- The Universal Postal Union (UPU) ensures freedom of transit within the territory of the Union.

- A Post Box Number is allotted to the customer, and a key is given to them.
- Correspondents of the Post Box renter can mention the Post Box number on the address portion, and the Post office will deliver the letters through the concerned Post Box.
- Only fully prepaid unregistered articles, except parcels, are delivered through the Post Box.
