Inland Post

  • The Department of Posts has rules and regulations for posting and delivery of mail.

Organisation

  • The postal system is divided into Circles, each with a Senior Superintendent or Superintendent of Post Offices who controls the working of Post Offices under their jurisdiction.
  • Each Circle has Postal Divisions under the charge of Senior Superintendents or Superintendents of Post Offices.
  • R.M.S. Offices and Sections are controlled by Senior Superintendents or Superintendents RMS in each Circle.

Types of Offices

  • Post Offices are divided into three classes: Head Post Offices, etc.

Payment of Postage

  • Prepayment of postage is desirable to avoid delay.
  • Postage stamps and stationery can be used for payment.
  • Franking machines can be used, but need to be set and sealed by an authorized officer.

General Rules as to Posting

  • Packing and sealing of articles should be done properly.
  • Posting of coins, etc., should be done in special letter boxes.
  • Posting in special letter boxes is only for letters and postcards.
  • Large official or other letters can be received by hand at the window of the van or post office.

Certificate of Posting

  • Certificates of posting can be obtained for registered or insured articles.
  • The machine will be set/re-set by an officer of the Department not below the rank of Public Relations Inspector (Postal) at the premises of the Ministry Department.

Method of Address

  • Particulars to be furnished on the article, including sender's address.
  • Addition of sender's address is necessary for proper delivery.
  • Intimation of address to correspondents abroad is required.

Delivery

  • Delivery of a postal article is deemed to be delivered to the addressee when it is delivered to the house or office of the addressee or to the addressee or his servant or agent.
  • Registered articles will not be delivered to the addressee unless and until they or their agent authorized in writing has signed a receipt for it.
  • Refusal of registered articles presented for delivery is allowed if the addressee or their agent does not sign the receipt.
