PMGSY in Himachal Pradesh

The Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana was introduced on 1 January 2000.

Rural road connectivity is not a critical component in the socio-economic development of rural population.

The programme aimed at covering all the unconnected rural habitations with a population of 500 and above by 2003.

In Himachal Pradesh, the objective was to connect habitations with a population of 1,000 persons and above.

The PMGSY did not permit upgradation of the existing roads in those districts where all the eligible habitations had already been provided all-weather road connectivity.

The eligibility criteria for the programme considers a population of 250 persons and above in normal areas.

PMGSY-II was launched in October 2019.

The programme is implemented in the State by Public Works Department (PWD) through Himachal Pradesh Gram Sadak Development Agency (HPGSDA) chaired by the Additional Chief Secretary (PWD).

The execution part of the programme is carried out by 50 divisions as Programme Implementation Units (PIUs).

The total Centre share for the year 2019-20 was ₹ 724.34 Crore.
