Study Notes

Plant Tissues

  • Plant tissues are classified into two main types based on their dividing capacity: meristematic and permanent tissue.

Meristematic Tissue

  • Consists of actively dividing cells that have the ability to divide.
  • There are three types of meristematic tissues:
    • Apical meristem: found at the growing tips of stems and roots, responsible for increasing the length of stem and roots.
    • Intercalary meristem: found at the base of leaves, required for longitudinal growth of plants.
    • Lateral meristem: found on the lateral side of stems and roots, helps to increase the length of stem and roots.

Permanent Tissue

  • Formed from meristematic tissues, cells lose the ability to divide.
  • Divided into two main types:
    • Parenchyma: composed of unspecialized living cells with relatively thin cell walls, intercellular space, and found in soft parts of plants.
    • Collenchyma: composed of living and elongated cells with cell walls irregularly thickened at the corners.
