Flashcards
What makes a plant hard?
What makes a plant hard?
Sclerenchyma is a type of plant tissue that provides strength and rigidity, making the plant hard and stiff.
What does collenchyma do?
What does collenchyma do?
Collenchyma's primary function is to provide flexibility to the plant, allowing it to bend and sway without breaking.
Where is parenchyma found?
Where is parenchyma found?
Parenchyma is commonly found in various parts of the plant, including the roots, stems, leaves, and fruits, where it performs functions like storage and photosynthesis.

Study Notes
Plant Tissues
- Parenchyma is the most common simple permanent tissue, consisting of relatively unspecialized cells with thin cell walls that are living cells.
- Collenchyma allows bending of various parts of the plant, such as tendrils and stems of climbers, without breaking.
- Sclerenchyma tissue makes the plant hard and stiff, and is found in stems, around vascular bundles, in the veins of leaves, and in the hard covering of seeds and nuts.
- Sclerenchyma cells are long and narrow, with thickened walls due to lignin.
Irrigation
- Irrigation is the process of supplying water to crop plants through human efforts using canals, wells, reservoirs, and tube wells.
- The most common source of irrigation is tube wells.
Mixtures and Solutions
- Mixtures are constituted by more than one kind of pure form of matter.
- Sodium chloride is a pure substance, not a mixture.
Tyndall Effect
- The Tyndall effect is the scattering of light by colloidal particles, making the path of a beam of light visible.
- Examples of the Tyndall effect include the visibility of sunlight passing through the canopy of a dense forest and the scattering of light by particles of dust or smoke in a dark room.
Other
- Apical and intercalary meristems are not permanent tissues.
- Aerenchyma helps aquatic plants to float, but does not provide mechanical support.
- Lignin is the chemical deposited on the walls of sclerenchyma cells, making them impervious to water and air.
