Location and Structure of the Pituitary Gland
- The pituitary gland is located near the hypothalamus and is housed within the sella turcica of the sphenoid bone.
- Bordered laterally by the cavernous sinus, which contains the internal carotid artery and cranial nerves III-VI.
- Superiorly bounded by the optic chiasm, part of the third ventricle, and hypothalamus.
Hypothalamus Overview
- The hypothalamus is critical for body homeostasis, integral to the limbic system, and constitutes approximately 0.3% of total brain mass.
- Functions as a collection of nuclei, many not distinctly segregated, facilitating hormone production.
Hormone-Producing Cells in the Anterior Pituitary
- Acidophils: Contain polypeptide hormones; cytoplasm stains red to orange; includes somatotrophs and lactotrophs.
- Basophils: Comprise glycoprotein hormones; cytoplasm stains blue to purple; includes thyrotrophs, gonadotrophs, and corticotrophs.
- Chromophobes: Poorly staining cells that represent stem cells yet to differentiate into mature cells.
Hypothalamic Nuclei
- Nuclei produce hormones such as thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH), gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH), growth hormone-releasing hormone (GHRH), corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH), somatostatin, dopamine, antidiuretic hormone (ADH), and oxytocin, contributing to endocrine regulation.
Anterior Pituitary Structure
