Study Notes
Pitot Static System
- A Pitot Static system comprises two interconnected systems: the Pitot system and the Static system.
- The Pitot system measures total pressure, resulting from the aircraft's forward motion through the air (ram air effect).
- The Static system measures the static pressure of the surrounding atmosphere.
- Together, these pressures yield information critical for flight, such as speed, altitude, and rate of change of altitude.
- Information is communicated via pressure sensors, pipelines, and internal components, ultimately reaching the instrumentation panel.
- Pitot pressure is also called impact pressure or dynamic pressure.
- Pitot pressure is generated by aircraft motion through the air or air movement relative to the aircraft.
- Static pressure is the pressure of air at rest, measured by a static tube or vent.
- Both pressures are measured in terms of speed, altitude, and rate of change of altitude.
Components
- External Components:
- Pitot Static tube or probe
- Pipelines (Pitot and Static) connecting to the probe
- Drain valves (Pitot and Static)
- Internal Components:
- Airspeed Indicator
- Altimeter
- Vertical Speed Indicator
- Some complex systems have a selector valve for alternating static pressure sources.
Instruments
- Airspeed Indicator: Displays aircraft speed.
- Altimeter: Displays aircraft altitude.
- Vertical Speed Indicator (VSI): Indicates the rate of change in altitude.
Pitot Static Tube/Probe
- The tube/probe has inner and outer tubes.
- The inner tube has an open front, measuring pitot pressure.
- The outer tube, with slots, measures static pressure.
- It's positioned on the aircraft where airflow is stable.
- The probe incorporates heating elements.
Pipelines
- Pipelines are made of aluminum or stainless steel.
- Pitot pipelines have a diameter of 5/16 inch.
- Static pipelines have a diameter of 3/8 inch.
- Pipeline diameter is based on distance from the pressure source to the instrument to minimize pressure drop.
Water Drain Valves
- Purpose: To drain water condensed in the system.
- Location: Situated at the lowest part of the system.
- Importance: Precludes inaccuracies, pipeline breakage, and potential aircraft hazards.
Alternate Pressure Sources
- A backup system exists for the primary pitot-static pressure source in case of failure.
- Backup pressure sources might be activated during icing conditions or other failures impacting the primary source.
Heater
- Electrical heating elements are situated within the probe head to maintain stable readings in cold conditions.
- The power to the heater is controlled by a switch in the cockpit.
Maintenance
- Regular checks (Sense and Leak Test) are mandatory to ensure accurate function and instrument readings.
- Checks are needed if a pitot or static connection is damaged, broken, or disturbed.
- All instruments related to the pitot-static system must be inspected after pipeline replacement.
Safety Precautions
- Warnings and labels highlight critical locations and components.
Pitot-static Related Disasters
- Historical examples of accidents involving Pitot-static system failures are included to enhance understanding of system importance.
ICAO Standard Conditions
- ICAO standard conditions at sea level refer to an atmospheric pressure of 1,013.2 hPa or 29.92 inches of Mercury or 14.7 psi.
Overall Function
- A Pitot Static System transmits pressure information gathered from the aircraft's movement and the surrounding atmosphere.
- Data from the system are used to drive different primary flight instruments.
- The various components and systems are interconnected to the instrumentation using coding, and marking systems.
