Piperacillin/Tazobactam (Zosyn) Overview
- Classified as an extended spectrum penicillin, effective against a variety of infections.
Indications for Use
- Commonly prescribed for appendicitis, peritonitis, skin and gynecologic infections, and pneumonia.
Mechanism of Action
- Functions by binding to the bacterial cell wall membrane, leading to cell death.
- Inhibits beta-lactamase, an enzyme that can render other antibiotics ineffective.
Potential Side Effects
- Can cause seizures, pseudomembranous colitis, interstitial nephritis, rash, and bleeding.
- May trigger hypersensitivity reactions and serum sickness.
Nursing Interventions
- Collect appropriate specimens for culture and sensitivity.
- Monitor for signs and symptoms of anaphylaxis, a severe allergic reaction.
- Evaluate complete blood count (CBC), potassium levels, blood urea nitrogen (BUN), prothrombin time (PT), and activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT).
- Watch for decreased total albumin levels in lab results.
