Bar Graphs vs Pie Charts
- A variety of charts and graphs exist to organize, describe, and display data.
- Bar graphs and pie charts are two common types of graphs used to represent data.
Bar Graphs
- Use rectangular bars to represent data, either horizontally or vertically.
- Length of each bar relates to the measurement in the data.
- Bars are the same width, but the height of each bar varies depending on the data.
- Used to compare different sets of data within a group.
- Can show changes in data over time by comparing days, weeks, months, or years between data sets.
- Two axes: one names the categories, the other shows the range of values.
Reading Bar Graphs
- Title gives information about the purpose of the graph.
- Axes are titled and labeled.
- Intervals on the scale are used to measure data.
- Amounts can be estimated by looking at the bar in relation to the intervals.
Pie Charts
- Use a circle to represent the entire amount, or 100%.
- Sectors, or sections of the circle, show the size or measurement of each part of the data.
- Sectors are often different colors to help viewers differentiate between the pieces.
- All sectors on a pie chart should add up to 100%.
- Used to represent data as a fractional amount or as part of the whole.
- Can be used to show the composition of something.
