Study Notes
- The notes cover general physiology for technologists, specifically HST109, second semester 2024/2025
- The notes will cover section 1
- Physiology of Muscle Tissues is the topic
- Will cover; definition of physiology, functions of the muscular system, and types of muscles
Physiology Definition
- Physiology is the study of the functions of the human body and its mechanisms
Functions of the Muscular System
- Mobility: Muscles contribute to gross and fine movement when they contract
- Posture: Skeletal muscles maintain the body's correct position when sitting or standing
- Circulation: The heart, a muscle, pumps blood throughout the body
- Circulation: Smooth muscle in arteries and veins also aids in blood circulation
- Respiration: Contraction of the diaphragm pushes downward, enlarging the chest cavity and allowing the lungs to fill with air
- Respiration: The diaphragm muscle's relaxation pushes air out of the lungs
- Digestion: Smooth muscles control digestion in the gastrointestinal tract.
- Digestion: Food moves through the digestive system via peristalsis, a wave-like motion
- Digestion: Muscles in the walls of hollow organs contract and relax to move food through the oesophagus into the stomach.
- Digestion: Digested food moves to the intestines via peristalsis, and the remaining waste is passed out of the body as stool through muscle contraction
- Urination: The urinary system relies on smooth and skeletal muscles
- Urination: Muscles and nerves work together to hold and release urine from the bladder
Types of Muscles
- Skeletal muscles are striated and voluntary
- Smooth muscles are non-striated, involuntary, and plain
- Cardiac muscles are striated and involuntary
