Physical Science Overview

Chemistry

Chemistry is one of the basic sciences concerned with the study of matter, its composition, properties, structure, formation, reactions, and changes. This field encompasses both observational astronomy – which includes studying light from distant stars to determine their temperature and distance – and theoretical astrophysics, which applies principles like quantum mechanics and general relativity to explain what happens in space.

Physics

The third major branch, physics, is the most fundamental of all natural sciences. It deals with the nature and properties of matter and energy, and their interaction. Key areas of focus in physics include mechanics, electromagnetism, thermodynamics, optics, atomic and molecular physics, particle physics, cosmology, astrophysics, quantum mechanics, and condensed matter physics.

Each of these fields contributes unique perspectives on the physical world around us. For example, chemistry explains the arrangement of atoms in molecules and how those arrangements affect chemical reactions; meanwhile, physics offers insight into the fundamental laws governing matter's motion and interactions. Astronomy shows us the vastness of the cosmos and helps us understand our place within it. Together, chemistry, astronomy, and physics provide a holistic understanding of the physical world.
