Chlorophyll: The Light-Harvesting Pigment

Chlorophyll is a green pigment found in plant and algal cells, which plays a crucial role in the light-harvesting process. Chlorophyll molecules absorb light and transfer the energy to specialized proteins called reaction centers, which initiate the light reaction of photosynthesis.

Light Reaction: Energy Capture

The light reaction occurs in the chloroplasts, an organelle found in plant cells. Light energy is absorbed by chlorophyll and other pigments, which excite electrons. These excited electrons move through a series of electron transport chains, generating a proton gradient across the thylakoid membrane.
