Study Notes

Photosynthesis - Light-Dependent Reactions

  • ATP is created through a process called chemiosmosis
  • High concentration of H+ protons builds up inside the thylakoid membrane
  • H+ ions move across the membrane to generate ATP
  • ADP combines with a free phosphate, forming ATP, a high-energy molecule
  • High-energy molecules NADPH and ATP are used in the Calvin Cycle

Calvin Cycle

  • Takes place in the stroma (outside thylakoid)
  • Carbon fixation: CO2 combines with RuBP
  • This unstable molecule splits into two 3-carbon molecules (3-PGA)
  • 3-PGA molecules combine with phosphate from ATP and H+ from NADPH
  • The result is G3P, a 3-carbon sugar molecule
  • One G3P molecule is used to make glucose
  • Other G3P molecules are used to regenerate RuBP, to continue the cycle
