Assimilation
- Assimilation is the different realization of a phoneme as a result of being near some other phoneme belonging to a neighboring word.
- Every consonant and every vowel is affected by its neighboring consonants and vowels. This adaptation of segments to each other is sometimes referred to as "assimilation".
Directions of Assimilation
- If a phoneme is affected by one that comes later in the sentence, the assimilation is termed regressive.
- If a phoneme is affected by one that came earlier in the utterance, the assimilation is termed progressive.
