Study Notes
Passport
- A passport is an official document issued by a government, certifying the holder's identity and citizenship, and entitling them to travel under its protection to and from foreign countries.
- It is both a travel document and a primary national identity document issued to citizens of the Philippines.
- The Department of Foreign Affairs is responsible for issuing passports.
Types of Passport
- Regular (Maroon) Passport: issued to any citizen of the Philippines applying for a Philippine passport; used for all travel by Philippine citizens and non-official travel by Philippine government officials.
- Official (Red) Passport: issued to members of the Philippine government for use on official business; does not extend the privilege of diplomatic immunity.
- Diplomatic (Blue) Passport: issued to members of the Philippine diplomatic service, members of the Cabinet, and service attachés of other government agencies assigned to Philippine diplomatic posts abroad; extends the privilege of diplomatic immunity to the bearer.
Seating Assignments
- In most cases, passengers can reserve a specific seat in advance through phone, internet, or airport check-in.
- Exit rows are usually assigned at the airport check-in, as they require able-bodied passengers to help open the exterior door in an emergency.
- Some airlines keep a substantial inventory of seats under "airport control" and do not permit pre-assigned seating for deeply discounted promotional fares.
Airlines
- The air transport industry provides easy access to tourism destinations around the world, contributing to progress and creating jobs.
- The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has 230 member airlines, comprising 93% of scheduled international air traffic.
- In the United States, airlines are classified by the government in terms of operating revenue:
- Majors: generate annual revenues of $1 billion or more.
- National Airlines: have annual revenues between $100 million and $1 billion.
- Regional Airlines: have annual revenues of less than $100 million.
Airports
- An airport is a tract of land where aircraft can take off and land, equipped with hard-surfaced landing strips, a control tower, hangars, aircraft maintenance and refueling facilities, and accommodation for passengers and cargo.
- The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) classifies airports in the country:
- International Airports: capable of handling international flights.
- Principal or Domestic Airports: offer domestic flights, further classified into Class 1, Class 2, and Community Airports.
