National Artists for the Performing Arts

• Pablo S. Antonio was a National Artist for Architecture who established the Far Eastern University administrative and science building. He was awarded posthumously in 1976.
• Antonino Buenaventura was a National Artist for Music whose students included Restie Umali, Romulo Pargan, Alfred Vitangcol, Lucio San Pedro and Felipe Padilla de Leon.
• Leandro Locsin is the designer of Istana Nurul Iman(official palace residence of the Sultan of Brunei). His Philippine works can be seen in the Cultural Center of the Philippines, Folk Arts Theater, Philippine International Convention Center (PICC), Philippine Center for International Trade and Exhibition (PHILCITE), and Sofitel Philippine Plaza.
• Leonor Orosa-Goquingco founded the Filipinescas Dance Company which performed folk dances around the Philippines
• Francisca Reyes-Aquino founded the Filipiniana Dance Group
• Ryan Cayabyab is a National Artist known for the song "Da Coconut Nut".

Fernando C. Amorsolo

• He was the first National Artist for Painting in 1972.
• Amorsolo studied at the University of the Philippines School of Fine Arts.
• Fabian Dela Rosa mentored after his dad died when he was 13,
• He is credited with over 10,000 paintings and sketches.
• Amorsolo was also known as the "Grand Old Man of Philippine Art."
• Some of his works include Fruit Gatherer, Planting Rice, Dalagang Bukid, and The Making of the Philippine Flag.

Honorata "Atang" Dela Rama

• She was called "The First Star of Philippine Cinema" as she played the title role in Dalagang Bukid in 1919 and, the "Queen of Kundiman and Sarsuela" for her contributions to the art form in 1979.
• Dela Rama received the title of National Artist in 1987.

What Role Does a National Artist Play In One's Country?

• The title Philippine National Artist (PNA) signifies an individual's significant contribution to Philippine arts
• The award's establishment began with Presidential Proclamation No. 1001, s. 1972 by Ferdinand E. Marcos. Fernando Amorsolo was named a National Artist for Painting after death due to this.
• Proclamation No. 1144, s. 1973, Executive Order No. 236, s. 2003, and Executive Order No. 435, S. 2005- supported the mandate.
• These laws allowed more PNAs to be awarded in art forms like architecture, music, dance, theater, film and broadcasting, literature, and fiction writing.

Works of National Artists In Public Spaces: A Look At UP Diliman

• Guillermo Tolentino created Oblation (1935), a UP Diliman sculptural work, depicting a nude man with open arms which symbolizes sacrifice and freedom (awarded in 1973). Fernando Amorsolo : displays romantic bucolic landscapes and prominent portraits from The Commonwealth Period and the Second World War which can be viewed at the Jorge B. Vargas Museum in UP.

• Abdulmari Asia Imao created an unnamed 2006 sculpture is located in the garden of the Vargas Museum.

• Benedicto Cabrera (awarded in 2006) iconic artwork, Variations of Sabel (2015) made of aluminum sheets - is housed at the UP Theater.

• Jose Joya's mural is titled Barter of Panay (1978). The Virata School of Business contains this expressionist style work with soft, overlapping black, white, orange, brown, and golden-yellow planes. Architect Leandro Locsin circular structured The Church of the Holy Sacrifice, the first Catholic Church of its kind, using a thin shell design.

• Napoleon Abueva (awarded in 1973) created wooden cross and marble altar art for the Church of the Holy Sacrifice. In front of the Virata School of Business is the abstract science fiction-esque Spirit of Business (1979).

• Arturo Luz (awarded in 1997), created the River of Life floor mural which suggests that life if from God, the source of life.

• Vicente Manansala (awarded in 1981), with assistance Ang Kiukok (awarded in 2001), painted the 15 Stations of the Cross.

• Jose Maceda (awarded in 1997) was an avant-garde musician, composer, & ethnomusicologist who founded the UP Center for Ethnomusicology. He donated collections to the UNESCO Memory of the World.

• Francisco V. Coching - Pioneering Filipino illustrator using komiks in both nationalism and folklore/mythic themes awarded as National Artist for Visual Arts 2014

• Gerardo De Leon - Anti-American propagandist producing works in film also recognized as National Artist for Film in 1982.

• Nick Joaquin - Playwright, poet and novelist recognized as the National Artist for Literature in 1976 writing the Play "Portrait of the Artist" directed by Lamberto V. Avellana

Gawad sa Manlilikha ng Bayan

• Salinta Monon of Bansalan is the "last Bagobo weaver". Salinta creates traditional Bagobo-Tagabawa textiles known as inabal and received the Gawad sa Manlilikha ng Bayan (GAMABA) or the National Living Treasure Award in 1998.
