The Nervous System
- The nervous system is divided into two main parts: Central Nervous System (CNS) and Peripheral Nervous System (PNS)
- The CNS consists of the brain and spinal cord
- The PNS is further divided into two systems: Somatic Nervous System and Autonomic Nervous System (ANS)
Somatic vs Autonomic
- Somatic nervous system: responsible for controlling voluntary movements, such as walking and talking
- Autonomic nervous system: responsible for controlling involuntary functions, such as heart rate and digestion
Autonomic Nervous System (ANS)
- Divided into two subsystems: Sympathetic and Parasympathetic divisions
- The ANS regulates various involuntary functions, including heart rate, blood pressure, and digestion
Divisions of the ANS
- Sympathetic division: stimulates "fight or flight" responses, increasing heart rate and blood pressure
- Parasympathetic division: promotes relaxation and reduces heart rate and blood pressure
- Enteric division: a network of autonomic nerves located in the gut wall that regulates GI motility and secretion
Key Features of the ANS
- Ganglia: clusters of nerve cells outside the CNS
- Pre-ganglionic fibers: neurons that connect the CNS to the ganglia
- Post-ganglionic fibers: neurons that connect the ganglia to the effector organs
- Neurotransmitters: chemical messengers released by neurons to transmit signals, including acetylcholine (ACh) and norepinephrine (NE)
