Dimensions of the Self

  • The self is defined as what an individual sees, perceives, and defines oneself apart from others.
  • There are three dimensions of the self:
    • Physical: revolves around the physical body, responsible for movement, perception, and thinking.
    • Psychological: contains concepts of stress, cognition, behavior, attitude, emotion, and personality.
    • Spiritual: allows one to view oneself at a spiritual level, holding the perceived existence of God or a Supreme Being.

Attitude and Its Components

  • Attitude is a settled way of thinking and feeling about someone or something, reflecting in a person’s behavior.
  • Attitude has three components:
    • Affect: represents emotions directed to self, environment, and others.
    • Cognition: is the way we think, encompassing thoughts about ourselves, environment, and others.
    • Behavior: is the action or manifestation of attitude.

Factors Affecting the Formation of Attitude

    • Social factors: roles in social environments and social norms affect attitude.
    • Learning or Classical Conditioning: associating observations with attitude.
    • Operant Conditioning: developing attitude based on experiences with the environment.
    • Modeling: learning attitude through imitation.
