Periodontal Health
- A healthy periodontium is characterized by the absence or presence of up to two sites of clinically detectable inflammation, minimal or no bleeding on probing, and normal probing depths (≤3 mm).
- The periodontium can be intact (no attachment or bone loss) or reduced (previous attachment or bone loss).
Gingivitis
- Gingivitis is characterized by inflammation, erythema, edema, bleeding on probing, and normal probing depths (≤3 mm).
- The periodontium is stable with no current progressive attachment or bone loss.
Periodontitis
- Periodontitis is characterized by loss of periodontal support due to microbial-associated, host-mediated inflammation.
- It is marked by deeper probing depths (≥4 mm) and presence of interproximal attachment loss from the current disease state.
- This does not include attachment loss from a history of disease in currently stable patients.
Periodontal Staging
Stage I
- Characterized by 1-2 mm greatest interdental clinical attachment loss.
- Less than 10% bone loss.
Stage II
- Characterized by 3-4 mm greatest interdental clinical attachment loss.
- 10-20% bone loss.
Stage III
- Characterized by 4-5 mm greatest interdental clinical attachment loss.
- 20-30% bone loss.
Stage IV
- Characterized by ≥5 mm greatest interdental clinical attachment loss.
- More than 30% bone loss.
