Study Notes
Pelvic Region Anatomy
- The pelvic region is located below the abdomen and between the hips.
True Pelvis
- The upper border of the bony true pelvis is defined by the iliopectineal line.
- The true pelvis lies below the pelvic brim (the iliopectineal line).
- The pelvic diaphragm separates the true pelvis from the perineum.
Perineum
- The perineum is subdivided into an anterior urogenital triangle and a posterior anal triangle.
Urogenital Triangle
- The urogenital triangle is divided into two spaces by the perineal membrane: an upper deep space and a lower superficial space.
Bony Pelvis
- The bony pelvis is formed by four bones: two hip bones, the sacrum, and the coccyx.
Pelvic Cavity
- The true pelvis lies in the pelvic cavity.
- The subperitoneal space in the pelvic cavity is occupied by loose connective tissue.
Pelvic Outlet
- The pelvic outlet is formed by the coccyx, ischial tuberosities, and the inferior rami of the pubic bones.
Ischioanal Fossae
- Ischioanal fossae are fat-filled spaces located between the pelvic diaphragm and the perineal membrane on each side of the anal canal.
