SUDICA
- SUDICA is a term for any death in patients under 18 years old.
- Resuscitation should be started unless:
- There are signs of death according to national guidelines.
- The death is expected and not part of the care plan.
- Resuscitation should begin if there is any doubt about the death.
- Resuscitation is likely not successful if the child is:
- Pulseless
- Apnoeic
- Centrally cold to the touch
- Has signs of rigor mortis and/or postmortem lividity/staining.
Important points
- If a sibling is a twin they should go to the hospital urgently.
- If there is a delay due to police treating the scene as a crime scene, contact the Emergency Operations Center.
- Transport the patient to an Emergency Department that accepts pediatrics with a priority call, indicating no active resuscitation.
- Do not travel on blue lights.
- Complete a DATIX if there is a delay in transporting the patient to the hospital.
- Contact Emergency Business Services (EBS) to complete FORM A for both expected and unexpected deaths.
- Contact EBS for any safeguarding concerns.
- If a major or mass incident is declared, normal procedures do not apply and the major incident plan should be followed.
