Iron Deficiency (ID)
- Iron Deficiency can present clinically as: Extreme fatigue & Weakness, Chest pain, fast heartbeat or shortness of breath, Headache, dizziness, or lightheadedness, Inflammation or soreness of your tongue, Brittle nails, Pale skin, Cold hands and feet, Unusual cravings for non-nutritive substances.
Negative Impacts of ID: Pregnancy and Perinatal period
- Pregnancy: Breathing difficulties, fainting, tiredness, palpitations, sleep difficulties. Increased risk of: Perinatal infection, Pre-eclampsia, Bleeding, Post-partum cognitive impairment, Behavioral difficulties.
- Foetal brain requires iron for normal development.
- Adverse perinatal outcomes: IUGR, Prematurity, LBW
- IDA is prevalent in 20-25% of infant population.
- Chronic IDA in children may lead to: repeating grades, reading- and speech problems, attention problems, behavioral problems, internalizing problems.
Long-term effects of iron deficiency anemia
- Children presenting with IDA between 1-2 years of age may struggle with: Chronic IDA, not completing secondary school, not pursuing further education/studies, increased probability of being single, poorer emotional health, not catching up to their non-IDA peers, difficulty holding a job.
