Ms Catherine Mokgadi Mbuyane is the Director: Quality Management and Improvement at the National Department of Health, she holds an Honours in Public Administration.
Ms Ronel Steinhöbel is the Deputy Director: Quality Management and Improvement at the National Department of Health; she has a Master of Public Health (MPH), a Post Graduate Diploma in Dietetics and a B Dietetics.

Patient Blood Management (PBM) is a multi-disciplinary approach focused on optimizing patient care surrounding possible transfusions.
PBM covers all aspects of patient evaluation and clinical management surrounding transfusion decision-making.
PBM aims to minimize blood loss and optimize red blood cell mass.
PBM is aimed at keeping hemoglobin concentration within appropriate levels, minimizing blood loss, and optimizing hemostasis.

Iron Deficiency can present clinically as: Extreme fatigue & Weakness, Chest pain, fast heartbeat or shortness of breath, Headache, dizziness, or lightheadedness, Inflammation or soreness of your tongue, Brittle nails, Pale skin, Cold hands and feet, Unusual cravings for non-nutritive substances.

Pregnancy: Breathing difficulties, fainting, tiredness, palpitations, sleep difficulties. Increased risk of: Perinatal infection, Pre-eclampsia, Bleeding, Post-partum cognitive impairment, Behavioral difficulties.
Foetal brain requires iron for normal development.
Adverse perinatal outcomes: IUGR, Prematurity, LBW
IDA is prevalent in 20-25% of infant population.
Chronic IDA in children may lead to: repeating grades, reading- and speech problems, attention problems, behavioral problems, internalizing problems.

Children presenting with IDA between 1-2 years of age may struggle with: Chronic IDA, not completing secondary school, not pursuing further education/studies, increased probability of being single, poorer emotional health, not catching up to their non-IDA peers, difficulty holding a job.
