Characteristics of Salivary Gland Tumors

  • Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma: characterized by perineural spread
  • Benign salivary neoplasms: common symptom is painless, slowly growing swelling in the parotid region
  • Benign salivary neoplasms on palpation: well-defined and firm in consistency
  • Adenolymphoma: soft or cystic in consistency

Types of Tumors

  • Acinic Cell Carcinoma: arises from the acinic cells of the parotid gland
  • Mucoepidermoid Carcinoma: a type of malignant tumor that can arise in the salivary glands
  • Warthin's Tumor: a type of tumor that can arise in the salivary glands
  • Pleomorphic Adenoma: not a type of malignant tumor

Clinical Features

  • Carcinoma of the parotid: common feature is steadily enlarging swelling on the side of the face
