Study Notes
Pathogens
- Pathogens are microorganisms that cause disease
- Examples include bacteria, viruses, fungi and protists
- Pathogens are spread through air, direct contact (touching) and water
Types of Pathogens
- Viruses reproduce inside body cells, damaging and causing them to burst
- Bacteria are living organisms that reproduce outside of cells, sometimes producing toxins that cause harm to tissues
- Protists are single-celled eukaryotic organisms that can cause diseases
- Fungi can also cause disease (e.g., ringworm)
Disease Transmission
- Some diseases are spread by air (e.g., measles, flu)
- Some diseases are spread by direct contact (e.g., gonorrhea, HIV)
- Some diseases are spread by water (e.g., cholera from contaminated water)
- Some require an intermediary (e.g., malaria via mosquitos)
Pathogen Structure
- Bacteria are prokaryotes (lack a nucleus).
- Viruses are not made of cells, they lack organelles
- Fungi and Protists are eukaryotic (have a nucleus)
Disease Symptoms
- Diseases can have many symptoms: fever, rash, vomiting, etc.
- Symptoms are the body's response to the infection
Communicable Diseases
- Communicable diseases are spread from one organism to another
- Communicable diseases are caused by pathogens
Disease Comparison
- Measles, HIV, and COVID-19 are caused by viruses
- Malaria is caused by a protist
- Salmonella is a bacteria
