Parenting Styles

Authoritarian Parenting Style
- Characterized by high levels of demand and control, low levels of nurturance and communication.
- Firm control in the context of a cold and distant relationship.
- Demanding, with high standards for behavior, and expects strict obedience.
- May use harsh punishment as discipline, and does not listen to child's point of view.
- Children of authoritarian parents tend to be unhappy, fearful, anxious, and have weak communication skills.
- They do less well in school, have lower self-esteem, and are less skilled with peers.
Permissive Parenting Style
- Characterized by low levels of control in the context of a warm and supportive relationship.
- Highly accepting, undemanding, with lax rules and inconsistent discipline.
- Encourages child to express their point of view.
- Children of permissive parents tend to be domineering, egocentric, noncompliant, and have difficulties in peer relationships.
