Study Notes
Pancreas Function and Location
- The pancreas is a vital organ responsible for both endocrine and exocrine functions.
- Located behind the stomach, the pancreas is nestled between the duodenum (the first part of the small intestine) and the spleen.
- Shaped like a flattened pear or a fish with a tail, the pancreas is about 6-10 inches long.
Endocrine Functions
- The pancreas contains specialized hormone-producing cells called islets of Langerhans.
- Beta cells within the pancreas produce insulin, a hormone responsible for lowering blood glucose levels by allowing cells to absorb glucose from the bloodstream.
- In contrast, alpha cells produce glucagon, which helps to raise blood glucose levels by stimulating the liver to release stored glucose.
- Glucagon is released when blood sugar levels fall below the normal range.
- Insulin is released when blood sugar levels are elevated after a meal.
Exocrine Functions
- This function involves the production of digestive enzymes which are released through the pancreatic duct into the duodenum.
- The pancreas produces enzymes such as amylase (breaks down carbohydrates), lipase (breaks down fats), and protease (breaks down proteins), all crucial for digestion.
Bile Production and Storage
- Bile, essential for fat digestion, is produced by the liver.
- The gallbladder stores and concentrates bile, which is released into the duodenum to help digest fats.
Liver Functions
- The liver is responsible for detoxifying harmful substances from the bloodstream and plays a vital role in metabolism.
- The hepatic artery supplies the liver with oxygenated blood.
Interconnected Processes
- When food enters the small intestine, the pancreas releases digestive enzymes into the duodenum, aiding in the breakdown of food.
- The presence of fats in the duodenum triggers the release of bile from the gallbladder.
- The liver also processes and stores nutrients absorbed from the intestines.
