- Most common form of arthritis, a disease of diarthrodial joints.
- Involves the entire joint, including articular cartilage, synovium, capsule, and subchondral bone.
Epidemiology
- One of the leading causes of disability and loss of productivity, and on the rise.
- Affects 1/10 Canadian adults.
- Prevalence increases with age, with 65% of those over 80 affected.
- Prevalence varies by:
- Gender: 11.6 (men) vs 16.7 (women) per 1000.
- Genetics.
- Ethnicity: Hip OA more prevalent in whites than Indians, Asians, or blacks.
Risk Factors
- Obesity: A 1 kg increase in weight increases the risk of developing osteoarthritis by 9-13%.
- Advancing age:
- Symptomatic knee OA: 4.9% for all >25yo vs 12.1% for those over 60yo.
- Female vs men:
- Hip, knee, and hand OA more prevalent in women >50yo.
